What is a good reaction time?

On a simple visual test, one signal and one response, healthy adults usually land somewhere between 200 and 300 milliseconds. People react a little faster to sound than to light, because a sound reaches the brain through fewer processing steps.

The ratings in the table above are our own scale for this specific test, not a clinical standard. They exist to put your number in context and make progress visible. If you need a normed value, a standardized test under controlled conditions is the only thing that gives you one.

One thing worth being honest about: this does not measure your nervous system alone. Between the color change and the click sit your screen, your input device, and your browser. That share is real and can add tens of milliseconds.

What actually changes your reaction time

Sleep is the single biggest lever. After a short night your times get slower and, more tellingly, less consistent: you pick up a few badly delayed rounds while your best attempt barely moves. That is exactly why the average tells you more than the best time.

Attention and expectation matter a lot. If the wait before the signal were always the same, you would predict it and look faster without reacting faster. That is why the wait here is random, between 1.5 and 6 seconds.

Age plays a part, but more slowly than people assume: times drift gradually across a lifetime, and the spread between individuals is wider than the gap between age groups.

Hardware comes down to three things. A 60 Hz screen shows the color change on average about 8 milliseconds later than a 144 Hz one. A mouse is faster and steadier than a trackpad. And a browser loaded with active background tabs can stall an individual round noticeably.

Caffeine can nudge times down slightly. Alcohol pushes them up, reliably and by a lot.

Reaction time in gaming

In shooters and fighting games, raw reaction time is real but it is rarely the thing separating players. What separates them is reading the situation early, so the response is half prepared before the signal even lands. A player who anticipates a peek reacts to a much simpler cue than a player waiting cold.

The number that shows up in this test is your floor, not your in-game latency. On top of it stack your monitor refresh rate, the game's input handling, and the network in online play. Chasing a 10 millisecond improvement in your raw reaction is usually worse value than a higher refresh rate, a wired connection, and enough sleep to stop losing 50 milliseconds to fatigue.

If you want to train the part that responds to training, practice the specific read: the exact cue you are reacting to in your game, over and over, until recognizing it costs almost nothing.

How to get a clean result

Use the same hardware when you want to compare. A result from a mouse and one from a phone do not belong in the same series.

Do two or three warm-up rounds before you count a run. The first attempt is almost always the slowest.

React to the color, not to your sense of timing. Clicking on a hunch either voids the round or produces an unrealistically low number that measures nothing.

Test at the same time of day. The swing across a day is large enough to fake progress or hide it.

What is an average reaction time?

Why is my result different on my phone than on my PC?

A touchscreen registers a tap differently than a mouse registers a click, and refresh rates differ. Compare results only within the same device.

Does my monitor affect the result?

Yes. The test measures the time from the color change to your click, and that includes the delay of your screen and input device. Between 60 and 144 Hz there is about 8 milliseconds on average in the display alone.

Can you train reaction time?

Part of it. With practice your times improve quickly at first, because you know the task and hesitate less. Then it flattens, because raw nerve conduction speed barely trains. The bigger lever stays sleep.

What reaction time do pro gamers have?

Measured on a test like this, top players sit in the low 200s to around 150 milliseconds, but the gap to a rested amateur is smaller than most think. In-game they win on reading the play early, not on a faster raw reflex.

Why is the wait before the signal a different length each time?

So you cannot predict it. With a fixed wait you would anticipate the click and measure a number that does not reflect your reaction.

Are my results saved?

Your best time is stored locally in your browser so you find it again next visit. Nothing is sent to a server.
